Smoking For Jesus football ready to apply what they’ve learned in final non-district game

The Smoking For Jesus football team wants to wrap up its final pre-district contest with road win at Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills.
The game is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.
Head coach Charles Frazier, Sr. noted the bulked-up schedule has given the Eagles (1-5, 0-1 Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations), who won two straight state titles as members of the Texas Christian Athletic League, what he wanted in a season where the program lost five players to graduation in the spring.
“I’m looking for my team to understand the schedule we put together was to try them,” he said. “We’re better than our record indicates.”
He pointed out the opponents have a combined record of 27-6 so far this season. The Eagles are still ranked, Frazier believes, because of the schedule. The last three games of the season are all at home and in district play. Their record will seed them for a bracket tournament to determine a state champion.
Now it’s about eliminating mistakes and putting the players in position to be successful.
“We’re still trying to find our footing,” he said. “We’re going to stock the well. We’ll have everybody back.”
The Eagles lost to May, a University Interscholastic League member ranked No. 1 in the nation, 58-12 Sept. 30 in a contest that ended in the third quarter.
“We were down three starters,” he said. “We still went down and held them. We had young kids in, and it was a big game. We went down on the first drive and scored. If we had had those three players, the outcome would have been different. Let’s climb this ladder and make a run. We still haven’t lost the focus to three-peat.”
